Maryland House District 5A stretches from the Pennsylvania line in the North to the edges of the Liberty Resevoir in Southern Carroll County. It's Eastern border is the Baltimore County line.
The largest district in Carroll County, 5A includes the cities of Westminster, Finksburg, Hampstead, and Manchester.
As one of the Northernmost districts in Maryland, 5A is one of the places that has been hardest hit by Governor O'Malley's tax hikes and Maryland's generally un-friendly climate for small business. Businesses in Carroll County suffer because Pennsylvania, with it's tax-free clothes and food shopping is, understandably, a major attraction for Carroll County residents.
The district has a rich farming history, including produce and dairy. Economic and residential growth have caused access to water to become a major issue for community residents. District 5A and Carroll County feature some of the best schools in Maryland and there is a strong family atmosphere in each community.
District 5A is represented in the Maryland General Assembly by one State Senator and two State Delegates who are each elected district-wide every four years. 2010 is the next election for these offices.
